Information About Hainan Airlines

Hainan Airlines (HU), one of China's largest airlines, was founded in October 1989 as Hainan Province Airlines in Hainan, China's largest special economic zone, and its current headquarters is located in Haikou. Hainan Province Airlines became China's first joint-stock air carrier following restructuring in January 1993 and began service on May 2, 1993. The first 250 million Chinese Yuan ($31.25 million) was financed by the Hainan government (5.33%). The rest came from institutional shareholders. In 1996, it was renamed Hainan Airlines. American Aviation LLC, controlled by George Soros, has been a major shareholder of Hainan Airlines since 1995. It also has other headquarters at Beijing (Beijing) Capital International Airport (PEK), Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) and Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY). Hainan Airlines operates flights to approximately 90 destinations in Asia, Europe and North America. A significant part of the airline's flight network consists of domestic destinations. Hainan Airlines has also signed codeshare agreements with 11 other airlines.
