Adam Air was founded in 2002 by Agung Laksono, an Indonesian businessman and speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, and Sandra Ang, from the Indonesian-Chinese family that owns the company. The name of the company comes from Sandra Ang's son, Adam Suherman. It is known that Adam Suherman offered his family to establish an airline company after receiving education in America. He also served as the CEO of the company. The company made its first flight from Jakarta to Medan and Denpasar on December 19, 2003.
