It was established in September 1962 as the country's national airline. In October the same year Spantax started leasing DC-3 equipment and also provided technical assistance. In addition to domestic services, Nouakchott International Airport operates flights to African destinations and Paris. The main headquarters was in Nouakchott. The airline was reorganized in 1967 and its shares were divided between the Mauritanian government, with a controlling interest of 60%, Air Afrique, 20%, and Union de Transports Aeriens, 20%. Two Ilyushin II-18s were purchased in 1969, with the Soviets providing training and technical assistance. These planes flew to Dakar, Nouadhibou and Las Palmas. In March 1970 the airline had 120 employees and operated a domestic network and international services to the Canary Islands and Mali, using a DC-3, a DC-4 and a BIRLL-18.
